Tom Lewis -
Founder and Workshop Lead
Tom is an experienced Forest School and Outdoor Learning Educator who has worked with children from Reception to Year 6. A keen beekeeper, he is passionate about inspiring schools across the country to bring more outdoor learning into their everyday teaching. He founded The Open Air Academy to share his belief that children learn best when they are curious, active, and connected to the natural world, and to help schools make outdoor learning a meaningful part of everyday education.

Joanna Backhurst - Educational Adviser
Joanna joins us with a wealth of knowledge and experience in primary education. As a dedicated teacher and school leader, she has spent many years inspiring children through creative and engaging learning experiences. Passionate about outdoor learning, Joanna believes every child should have the opportunity to explore, discover, and learn through nature. Her insight, enthusiasm, and practical advice are invaluable to our team and the schools we work with.

Denise Lewis - Curriculum Development Specialist
Denise is a key part of our educational team. She has spent ten years, and counting, as a deputy head in a large junior school and over twenty years as a class teacher before that. With extensive experience in curriculum development across a wide range of subjects, Denise brings a deep understanding of how children learn best. As a qualified Forest School Leader, she has been a pioneer in helping schools get children learning outside as much as possible.
